As a member of the Greek community, you will have the opportunity to meet students and alumni of various backgrounds with both similar and different interests. Within each chapter, there is a close bond of friendship and brotherhood which only the Greek environment can foster. In creating a home away from home, it will lead to a positive experience not just during your undergraduate years, but for the rest of your life.
Leadership
A fraternity requires all brothers to hold positions of responsibility to maintain operations on various levels. Everyone in a fraternity is a leader; whether an as officer, being on a committee, being a participant or as a voice in the chapter. It takes the collective group to manage a budget, maintain a $1 million + physical plant, run meetings, engage in public speaking, motivate others, plan an event, manage a philanthropic event, and handle various other aspects that will provide hands-on experience that will set you apart from other students. To get a good job these days, it takes more than just a degree – it takes leadership experience!
Academics
The academic portion of your university career is a large determining factor in your future success. A primary purpose of the Greek community is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members. Several factors contribute to this academic atmosphere, including peer tutoring, upperclassman counseling and having someone you know in your classes. In addition, chapter study hours introduces new students to the longer and more intense studying that college requires. Fraternities help you meet the challenge of balancing academics while gaining the most from your collegiate experience.
Athletics
Delta Sigma Phi participates in numerous competitive sports through intramurals (IMs) and Greek tournaments. It’s difficult to get a group of people on your own to play team intramural sports or a pickup game together on a Sunday afternoon. Fraternities offer all of this, along with the pride of sportsmanship, team spirit, and competition!
Involvement
Whether through THON, Homecoming, Greek Sing, Greek Week, social activities, educational seminars or various philanthropic events throughout the year, being in a fraternity provides the opportunity to enhance the memories during one’s time at Penn State. The brotherhood is actively involved in various aspects throughout the community that otherwise would not be available to individuals.
Career Networking
Delta Sigma Phi Penn State has over twelve hundred alumni, including numerous faculty members at Penn State and leaders of their industry. Alumni return to the Delta Sigma Phi house often, keeping them in contact with the active brothers and continually supporting the activities of the Chapter. This allows for unexpected friendships, business opportunities and mentoring opportunities to occur. Joining Delta Sigma Phi can be an investment in your future!
Alumni Benefits
Delta Sigma Phi alumni maintain a vital presence in the Chapter and are actively involved in the house’s operations and keeping all informed on the status of the Chapter. One’s time as a Delta Sigma Phi brother extends beyond their undergraduate years. Whether through Homecoming gatherings, Tailgates, Golf Tournaments or other reunions, you will be a Delta Sigma Phi for life.
